Mells Manor. Frome
Monday 11 May 2020

A self drive visit to Mells Manor near Frome . There will be a private tour of the house by Lord Asquith whose home it is. Dating from the 16th century and Grade 1 listed the Manor was restored by Sir Edward Lutyens in the 20th century. A visit to the adjacent St Andrews church is also recommended. Approached by a medieval road it contains treasures such as an equestrian bronze by Sir Alfred Munnings (a predecessor of the Asquiths) on a plinth by Lutyens, plus a wall sconce and tapestry designed by Edward Burne Jones. The graveyard has the grave of poet Siegfried Sassoon and those of members of the Bonham-Carter family.

Picnics in the garden will be welcomed. Alternatively, members might like to book lunch at the nearby Talbot Arms pub (the owners also own The Lord Poulet in Hinton St George) or drop into the award winning Mells Cafe, which serves light lunches.
